A substantial lead (large fracture) has opened in the sea ice near the Polarstern, hindering expedition members’ access to equipment and research stations installed on the ice to the starboard side of the vessel. Leads naturally occur in the Arctic ice, but their numbers have noticeably increased due to global warming.
